The Town Council has passed a “state of emergency”
resolution to seek State and Federal aid for those adversely financially
impacted. The local Mayors have taken similar action in their municipalities and
collectively have asked the Lee County Commission to join them in seeking State
and Federal assistance.
Physical impacts reported as of noon today include Red Drift
Algae beginning to accumulate on the north end of the island. Minimal fish are
washing ashore onto the beach. The Town’s contracted workforce continues to
clean by hand the Critical Wildlife Area. Canal monitoring/ cleaning is now
being performed by one vessel and continues to monitor waterways of Fort Myers
Beach. A planned raking of the beach is being scheduled to remove tire
impressions left in the sand. Town staff is monitoring the situation and it
will be addressed accordingly. The Bay Oaks pool will be returning to normal
fee entry mode beginning on Thursday, August 9, 2018.
