Shorebird nesting season is underway with Killdeer, Wilson’s and Snowy Plovers laying eggs on the beach. FWC has roped off areas for nests and foraging habitat in and around the Critical Wildlife Area (CWA). It is important that the Town continue to educate dog owners that no dogs are allowed in the CWA, even if they are leashed lap dogs.
How you can help protect beach-nesting birds:
Never enter areas posted with shorebird/seabird signs.
Avoid driving on or beyond the upper beach.
Drive slow enough to avoid running over chicks.
Keep dogs on a leash and away from areas where birds may be nesting.
Keep cats indoors, and do not feed stray cats.
Properly dispose of trash to keep predators away.
When birds are aggravated, you are too close.
Do not fly kites near areas where birds may be nesting.
